“I do not want to make a painting,” the great Lucio Fontana said, “I want to open up space, create a new dimension, tie in the cosmos, as it endlessly expands beyond the confining plane of the picture.” Fontana’s work with—and within—space predates the later achievements of Robert Irwin, Donald Judd, and James Turrell. This landmark exhibition is the first opportunity in the U.S. to experience his experimental series Ambienti spaziali (Spatial Environments), a major step in the evolution of conceptual art. The exhibition consists of nine self-contained installations dating from 1948 to 1968. An important show. —E.C.
