Congo has been called an “irrelevant locale on the periphery of cultural history,” a notion that its sixth Biennale rejects as false. Congo’s position at the bisecting line of the globe gives it the longest segment of the Equator on the continent of Africa. The Biennale encourages artists to embrace this geographical distinction. Earth’s gravity on these equatorial lands is at its weakest, and so are the magnetic poles—in a sense, polarization is alleviated. Perhaps new centers of gravity can be found. In Lubumbashi, Congo is at the center of everything. —E.C.
