Picture a run-down, small-town, muscle-bound gym in New Mexico, in the 1980s. I know what you’re thinking: What better place to find true love? This is the setting where Lou (Kristen Stewart) and Jackie (Katy O’Brian) first lock eyes, kicking off a romance that underpins the intense spectacle that is Love Lies Bleeding. Lou is anxious, reserved, and unhappy with her life. She lives in the area and keeps the gym up and running. The imposing and fierce Jackie has stopped for a visit in New Mexico while on her way to a bodybuilding competition in Las Vegas. Not long after their lives intertwine, steroids begin circulating, fists fly, and gunshots resound. The excitement of Love Lies Bleeding is contingent on surprise, so I won’t reveal more of the plot.
