Peter van Agtmael was a junior at Yale when two planes flew into the Twin Towers. Once he graduated from college, he set out to photograph crucial issues such as the impact of the Three Gorges Dam in China, the toll of HIV in South Africa, and the aftermath of Haiti’s 2005 earthquake. In 2006, Van Agtmael’s focus shifted to the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. At just 24, he moved to Mosul, Iraq, for two months. “By embedding in the military, I saw a real cross section of society,” he told Interview magazine. “And as I started visiting [soldiers] at home it made me realize that just looking at the military coming home is a pretty limited way of looking at the U.S.” At the Bronx Documentary Center, 128 of Van Agtmael’s photos of the war and its long-term consequences, taken between 2006 and 2021, are on view. —Jensen Davis
