In the 1950s, modernist trends in the fine arts hadn’t yet reached Taiwan’s shores. At that time, the artist Liu Kuo-sung was in his 20s and was at the National Taiwan Normal University, studying under luminaries like Liao Chi-Chun He. Liu experimented with a new approach to traditional Chinese ink-wash painting, and then applied his new technique to landscapes. In 1956, the year he graduated, Liu founded a circle of like-minded artists called the Fifth Moon Group; they showcased their radical work at the Zhong Shan Hall in 1957. That exhibition, and those that came every year after, redefined Taipei’s cultural scene. This exhibition examines Liu’s long career through more than 60 paintings and 150 archival items. —Elena Clavarino
