In addition to mastering emotional expression (see: The Scream), Edvard Munch, who lived from 1863 to 1944, also painted physical afflictions. A new exhibition at his namesake museum in Oslo, showcases Munch’s eerie obsession with medicine, hospitals, sickness, and death, and features period objects such as a baby incubator, glass sputum bottles, a vaccine certificate, archival photographs, and nursing badges. The exhibition is a memento mori in and of itself—just as Munch intended. —Carolina de Armas
