Poor Cameron Mackintosh! What time is this to be touring Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular? After Season Three, Episode Five, fans of Apple TV’s Shrinking may think they never need to suffer Boublil & Schönberg’s weepie again. Remember Jimmy (Jason Segel) chauffeuring Paul (Harrison Ford) to the airport in his 1967 Ford Bronco and blowing off the open-top roof as Jean Valjean, hounded beyond human endurance? Remember Brian (Michael Urie), riding shotgun, blowing off what was left of the roof as Inspector Javert, dark angel of merciless law? (But it was clueless, mute Paul who stole the scene. How? He just watched.) All the same, the juggernaut tour proceeds with all its bells and lights and machines and whistles, and who’s to say that Radio City Music Hall isn’t the God-given place to catch it? Casts rotate. Alfie Boe is the alpha of the Jimmys—oops, Valjeans—alternating with Killian Donnelly and Gerónimo Rauch. As Javert, Bradley Jaden might have an edge over Jeremy Secomb, but don’t count on it. As Segel and Urie’s rendition of “The Confrontation” reminds us, Les Miz soars highest when it’s way over the top. —Matthew Gurewitsch
