Legends 2021 Gala

The Ghanian-British architect Sir David Adjaye and the professor Deborah Willis are now officially legends. This year’s Pratt Institute Legends Gala, a benefit to raise money for student scholarships, chose the two as the evening’s 2021 honorees. Adjaye, whose work ranges from private houses in Abu Dhabi to libraries in South Africa to stores in Los Angeles, is perhaps best known for designing The National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington D.C., which opened in 2016. Deborah Willis is the chair of the Department of Photography and Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, a prolific author, and a curator (a trifecta that earned her MacArthur and Guggenheim fellowships). The October 7 awards ceremony—presented by Harvard art history professor Sarah Lewis and architect-activist Pascale Seblan, and featuring talks by the honorees as well as speeches from Pratt alumni and faculty members—is available to stream online. — J.D.
