This year’s Road House reboot, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, left fans of action and martial arts films unfulfilled. Sure, the original 1989 film had (glaring) weaknesses when it came to things like plot and dialogue. But because of its simplicity—which the new version lacks—the initial Road House allowed audiences to focus entirely on Patrick Swayze and his gruesome, theatrical dispatch of the bad guys. He made the movie hum. In fact, the same can be said for Swayze’s roles in other cheesy delights: The Outsiders (1983), Dirty Dancing (1987), and Point Break (1991). These three films, along with Road House, make up the Metrograph’s summer series “Lazy, Hazy, Swayze Days.” The program is a perfect opportunity to take a load off and let the basic pleasure of a Swayze performance wash over you. —Jack Sullivan
