Klimt & The Kiss

The Kiss, by Gustav Klimt.

Streaming on Various

Having broken the U.K. box-office record for a feature documentary on art with Vermeer: The Greatest Exhibition, Seventh Art Productions now tells the story of The Kiss, Gustav Klimt’s erotic masterpiece. Exploring the painting in its setting at the Belvedere Museum, in Vienna, Klimt & The Kiss presents interviews with scholars and curators who offer insight into the artist, his technique, and the continuing debates over his personal life. Through the prism of The Kiss, they discuss the artist’s complicated relationship with women: he had innumerable affairs while in a long-term romance with Emilie Flöge, a teenager he met in his late 20s. Following Klimt’s death, 14 people claimed to be his illegitimate children. Though the nature of the depicted embrace is uncertain, Klimt & The Kiss leaves viewers with enough ideas to form their own opinions. —Jeanne Malle
