Gustav Klimt was not just a master of Viennese Modernism. He’s also been an inspiration for Hollywood (Woman in Gold) and rising painters everywhere. But who inspired Klimt? A joint exhibition between the Belvedere in Vienna and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam aims to answer that question. Had Klimt ever seen the work of Henri Matisse or Rodin? Was he influenced by Vincent van Gogh? Striking juxtapositions allow viewers to investigate the affinities between these artists. —Clara Molot
