“The works in this body of drawings” explains the American artist Kenny Rivero, “point directly to death, violence, fear, faith, spirituality, war, and magic.” Rivero is Washington Heights born and raised, but his parents are from the Dominican Republic. Drawing for as long as he can remember, his work is autobiographical, and brings New York and Caribbean aesthetics together in eclectic combinations of form and color. Rivero often draws on reclaimed material, a strategy, he says, that allows him “to reflect on the past, and engage with it in a tangible way.” This is his first-ever museum retrospective. —E.C.
