Josef Koudelka: Radici

Feb 1 – Aug 29, 2021
Lungotevere in Augusta, 00186 Roma RM, Italy

“I would like to see everything, look at everything,” the Czech-French photographer Josef Koudelka has said. “I want to be the view itself.” The word radici means “roots,” and Koudelka, who was born in 1938, has for 30 years been documenting all the most important archaeological relics on the lands that circle the Mediterranean Sea. His photographs, shot in black and white, are full of stone and sentience. They portray the silent power of the ancient, and the rich cultural heritage of European and Middle Eastern worlds. Here are 100 “views” from Koudelka. —E.C.
