In a world that puts artists in boxes, Jordi Savall is accounted a specialist in early music. In fact, the intellectual curiosity of this master of the viol and founder of medieval consorts extends far beyond the realm of sounds alone; he has toured and recorded dozens of richly rewarding, exquisitely presented thematic programs on subjects including Jerusalem, the slave trade, Don Quixote, and Joan of Arc. The crush of other early-music specialists has to an extent overshadowed Savall’s vibrant contributions in the core classical repertoire, but a trio of concerts in Salzburg this summer should open many eyes and ears. On tap: Haydn’s revolutionary oratorio The Creation, plus two evenings of the symphonic Beethoven, whose every exemplar of that form wrought new surprises. —Matthew Gurewitsch
