In a video created in 1971, the artist John Baldessari stood in front of the camera and solemnly repeated the sentence “I am making art.” From the beginning of his career in the 1960s, Baldessari used his practice to draw viewers away from a work’s aesthetic qualities, instead asking us to focus on its conceptual message. He experimented with many mediums and techniques, explored linguistics, and toyed endlessly with the imagery of pop culture. This exhibition focuses on his work from the 1980s to the 2000s. —Elena Clavarino
