“When I stand in front of a canvas,” said the Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist Joan Miró, “I never know what I’m going to do—and nobody is more surprised than I at what comes out.” Miró maintained that sense of surprise his entire life. Pursuing a path amid floating forms, he was never easy to categorize. After moving to a large studio in Palma de Mallorca in 1956, he experimented still further, reworking early pieces or others he had previously left incomplete. He used fire and scissors rather than brushes on canvas, and scoured flea markets for traditional works to overpaint. In this exhibition, Miró’s late experiments are the focus. Seventy-four works from the 1960s to the early 80s are on view. —Elena Clavarino
