In Philipe Jockey’s book, Le Mythe de la Grèce Blanche, the author deconstructs a myth that has long seemed fact: The whiteness of Greek sculpture in antiquity. Think of the marbles in the Parthenon, or the Winged Victory of Samothrace at the Louvre—white is one of the first adjectives that comes to mind. But in recent years, technology has revealed that the white marble is a product of thousands of years of wear and salt deterioration. Many classical sculptures were created in polychrome—color—and notions of white imperialism took root in a misconception. Taking this theory as a point of departure, the artist Jimmy Robert has mixed collage, photography, and sculpture to create a series that deconstructs those long established “facts.” —Elena Clavarino
