Although the artist Jens Adolf Jerichau inspired Danish painters after him, including Per Kirkeby and Asger Jorn, not much is known about his life. Born in 1890, Jerichau was only 26 when he committed suicide in 1916. Yet he left behind a substantial body of work, paintings that paid homage to the Old Masters and revisited the myths of antiquity in a surrealist style. The great Picasso himself invited Jerichau on a trip to Brittany, where they painted together. This long overdue exhibition, thus far the largest retrospective dedicated to Jerichau, sheds light on a prematurely lost but luminary artist. —E.C.
