Jeffrey Gibson revamps abstraction by weaving in new influences—Native American symbols, punk rock, and house music. “Can You Feel It,” by Mr. Fingers, is a legendary track that Gibson first heard in mid-1990s Chicago, when he lived in the city for four years. “That was a big critical experience for me in terms of thinking about how to respond to a challenging larger culture.” In 14 new works, Gibson pays homage to Chicago with vibrant visual rhythms and stylized letters in eye-popping grids (imagine if a Rubik’s Cube could spell!). —E.C.
