The retired French fashion legend Jean Paul Gaultier, known for his high-drama corsets and architectural gowns, was an early impresario of the runway show as Broadway production. “When I first started to do fashion shows I didn’t have the budget to hire top models so I would cast women who inspired me, and ask them to walk how they walked,” he once said. “I love for people to see my clothes, but it was more about the attitude of the girls.” Now his Fashion Freak Show, which premiered in Paris in 2019, lands onstage in London. Outfitting actors, dancers, and circus performers in his designs, Gaultier tells his life story, once again through people with attitude. —Jensen Davis
