The year 1982 brought breakthrough to Jean-Michel Basquiat. It marked the beginning of his personal mythology, the talismans and spiritual guides he planted in his art, figures that represented, Basquiat said, “royalty, heroism, and the streets.” His paintings from that year saw Abstract Expressionism getting gritty, graffiti ascending into the gallery, and young Basquiat heading into history. With 150 of his paintings, sculptures, and drawings on display, this Basquiat retrospective is big. Seven large-scale works made in collaboration with his longtime friend, Andy Warhol, are also on display. —E.C.
