Jazz Greats: Classic Photographs from the Bank of America Collection

William Gottlieb, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Brown, Milt (Milton) Jackson, and Timmie Rosenkrantz, Downbeat, 1947.

When jazz was gaining popularity in the 1950s, it was as honest, improvisational, and energized—not to mention stylish—as the artists who performed it. Think Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane. Much of the era was documented with stunning photographs. The musician Goon Mili shot sessions in his New York studio, while the double bassist and amateur photographer Milt Hinton captured friends and colleagues as they jammed across Manhattan. Professional photographers such as William Gottlieb, meanwhile, hung out in clubs, bars, and on the street—camera-ready. In this exhibition, hundreds of negatives capture the rise of jazz, starting in 1940s. —Elena Clavarino
