Jane Austen perfected the modern novel in the early 1800s. Within the comedy of manners she nestled brainy tales of Enlightenment idealism, and created characters whose challenges and triumphs make hearts sing two centuries on. In the exhibition “Jane Austen: Fashion & Sensibility,” costumes worn in beloved film and television productions of Austen classics are on display. Look for the wedding costumes of Marianne Dashwood and Colonel Brandon from Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility, day and evening wear from the BBC series Pride and Prejudice. Pieces from Emma (starring Gwyneth Paltrow) and Mansfield Park are here, too. —Sophie Kemp
