In 2017, FBI agents surprised Air Force linguist Reality Winner at her home in Georgia. The transcript of the pursuant interrogation inevitably reveals the agency’s accusation: Winner leaked evidence of Russian interference in the U.S. election of 2016. The dialogue begins easily, punctuated by laughter, but the agents, growing colder, portend the seriousness of their charges, for which Winner would later be incarcerated. Why, they ask, did she print out a specific document, the name of which remains classified? “Because,” she pauses, “it looked like a piece of history.” Based on the actual transcript, Is This A Room dramatizes a tension-filled conversation in which the line between patriotism and treason, dissent and dishonor, keeps moving. —C.J.F.
