Impressionism in Sculpture

June 18 – Oct 25, 2020
Schaumainkai 63, 60596 Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Impressionist sculpture rarely shares the spotlight with Impressionist painting, which so tremulously pointed the way to modernism. But sculptors did share the same concerns—the depiction of the everyday, a fascination with the ephemeral. Here is the first major exhibition to examine the ways Impressionism was expressed in three dimensions. The Städel exhibition looks at sculptures by Degas, Rodin, Rosso, Troubetzkoy, and Bugatti, placing them in the context of Impressionist paintings, pastels, drawings, and prints by Bonnard, Cassatt, Matisse, Monet, Renoir, and many more. —E.C.
