“For me it’s not what I’m doing, it’s the person looking at my work that’s more important,” the Russian-born conceptual artist Ilya Kabakov told Apollo magazine in 2017. Perhaps this suppression of ego is why he sometimes adopts a fictitious persona when making art. In fact, Kabakov’s wife, Emilia, has been his partner in this strategy of selflessness for decades. Their new exhibition features the “unfinished works” of imaginary artist Charles Rosenthal. These minimalist structures and empty canvases dare the viewer to think about vision—where it begins and to whom it belongs. —J.V.
