Ilit Azoulay creates photomontages from an archive of materials, objects, and images. In 2022, the Israel-born, Berlin-based artist presented “Queendom” in the Israeli Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale. For that show, the artist recomposed photographs of medieval Islamic vessels made of metal, seeming to catch them in mysterious transformation. Azoulay’s first U.S. retrospective—which highlights photography from 2011 to the present—is at New York’s Jewish Museum for a five-month run. —Zack Hauptman
