In 1979, following a car accident at the age of 36, Howardena Pindell set up a camera in her apartment and filmed Free, White, and 21. The film recounts the racism Pindell experienced as a Black woman in America. Along with dozens of multimedia works (including paintings such as Diallo) from throughout Pindell’s six-decade career, Free, White, and 21 is featured in her first solo exhibition in the U.K. Each facet of her practice demonstrates Pindell’s deftness across media, a depth of vision that has made her one of the leading voices in American art. —Antoinette Roberts
