“My conviction is that, now more than ever, real life is much stranger than any fiction one could imagine,” says the renowned German filmmaker Hito Steyerl. “So somehow the forms of reporting have to become crazier and stranger, too.” It was this thinking that propelled Steyerl to stardom, and to this day she is largely recognized for her revolutionary approach to documentary filmmaking. Steyerl’s films often explore some of the most pressing issues of modernity—protests, inequality, technology, and corporate domination—but they do so with unique flair, combining archival footage with imaginative computer-generated images. This all-encompassing show examines Steyerl’s conception of documentary filmmaking. —E.C.
