Fresh off the tawdry spectacle that was Anyone But You, Glen Powell is the lead in Richard Linklater’s Hit Man. The film is a hit, largely because of the man, but some critics don’t know what to do with it. They wonder how this romantic black comedy—about a fake hit man named Gary Johnson (Powell), tasked with swindling confessions out of trusting murder-for-hire solicitors—has so successfully charmed audiences and reviewers alike. “It’s only done well because the cast is so good-looking!” Maybe. “This is no Citizen Kane!” Absolutely true. But Linklater has a knack for planting smiles on faces, and Hit Man proves the rule. Powell, funny throughout, begins an affair with Madison (Adria Arjona), a married woman who employs him to do away with her abusive husband. Saying more would spoil the fun, but know that fun lurks around every corner. Sure, Hit Man wouldn’t win a Palme d’Or. But it’s a light summer treat. —Jack Sullivan
