In today’s world, nearly half of our design students are women. But back in the early 1900s the field was dominated by men—no surprise—and women struggled for recognition. They contributed a great deal nonetheless. In the 1920s, Eileen Gray created one of the world’s first modernist villas, E-1027, while Charlotte Perriand invented the celebrated chaise lounge. Clara Porset coined new objects, reinterpreting colonial Mexican materials. This exhibition gives these women their due. Also included are business leaders Florence Knoll and Armi Ratia, and the modernist Lilly Reich. —E.C.
