Herbert Boeckl and Oskar Kokoschka, two important Austrian Expressionist painters, used drawing as “an autonomous vehicle of artistic expression,” according to the Albertina Modern. In a joint exhibition, 120 works on paper by these two artists show their styles evolving during a time of significant historical and cultural change. They move from nudes to the Expressionist landscapes, watercolors, and still lifes of the interwar period. —Jeanne Malle
