While 2020 has brought a larger-than-fair share of hardship, it’s also cause for celebration. This year marks the centennial of the 19th Amendment’s ratification, legislation that gave women in the U.S. the right to vote, and, in the literary sphere, encouraged their voices. The National Portrait Gallery highlights 24 of these women, ranging from Margaret Wise Brown (Good Night Moon) to Sandra Cisneros (The House on Mango Street) to Alice Walker (The Color Purple)—winners of Pulitzers and Nobels, hailing from all walks of life, and redefining the American classic. —J.V.
