In 1905, when Henri Matisse and his fellow Fauves (“wild beasts”) exhibited together at the Salon d’Automne, the room was alive with lusty color; the critic Louis Vauxcelles described it as an “orgy of pure tones.” Matisse would live out his later years in Nice, where he created astounding objects in his studio. Eventually confined to his small bed, he still didn’t stop: with scissors and colored paper Matisse created a joyful series of cutouts. This exhibition presents 150 works from the collection of the Musée Matisse Nice. They span the artist’s lengthy and prolific career. —Elena Clavarino
