At the age of 94 one is usually long retired. But not Heinz Mack. “When I get to the studio,” he has said, “I completely forget how old I am.” Born in Lollar, Germany, in 1931, Mack studied fine arts and philosophy in the 1950s. In that same decade, he co-founded ZERO, an art collective that focused on new aesthetic principles and ideas. Mack helped bring Op art to a wider audience, playing with the illusion of movement and vibration in his work. This exclusive exhibition from Fondation Le Corbusier at Maison La Roche invites Mack’s kinetic frenzy to mix with the setting’s modernist architecture. —Maggie Turner
