“Photography has always been about documentary, the depiction of the instant, a moment, sometimes a place,” says the French photographer, artist, and fashion designer Hedi Slimane. He has long believed that black-and-white photographs—especially still lifes—are the most singular expression of youth. In his first solo show since 2014, Slimane presents studio portraits of iconic musicians, among them Lou Reed, Keith Richards, Brian Wilson, and Amy Winehouse. All emit solemn power, and are accompanied by a sound installation that highlights Slimane’s lifelong passion for music. —E.C.
