Hans-Peter Feldmann

Streaming on Simon Lee Gallery

“In my family, no one talked about art,” explains the German artist Hans Peter Feldmann, “so eventually I found out that such a thing existed for myself from postcards and books.” It was his collecting and collaging of imagery and ephemera—which he sometimes photographs—that came to define his practice. Feldmann is low key about his rejection of high art and its presumptions. “Individual photos are not right for me,” he explains. “I find them too loaded with meaning, too elitist.” Instead he does a series of photos, with as little context as possible. Viewers can create their own narratives. His message? It isn’t just the artist that makes art. —E.C.
