The exhibition titled “Hanran,” Japanese for deluge or flood, presents photography that documents the 1930s to the 1990s, decades of complex and unrelenting change that include, of course, the nuclear devastation of 1945. On view for the first time outside Japan, this work, by 28 photographers, captures a social and political turmoil unlike that experienced by any other nation. —E.C.
