Sculpture and performance artist Hannah Toticki uses humor and color to critique Western society. In a 2019 show about work and debt, for example, she used clips from Disney movies to “tell the history of the use of money as it coincides with colonization.” Her most recent show, Storage of the Gods, focuses on religion and faith. Toticki explores our lack of a shared, sacred dimension. She reexamines the theme of work, but this time views it as the only obligation of modern society great enough to fill the space once occupied by religion. Organized in three parts, the show considers guardian angels as presences we long for, dreams as a human link to the divine, and crowns as historical ties to the sacred. —Jeanne Malle
