Hannah Starkey: In Real Life

Hannah Starkey, Pussy Power, Women’s March, London 2017.

Nov 16, 2022 – Apr 30, 2023
Gallery Walk, Wakefield WF1 5AW, United Kingdom

The photographer Hannah Starkey describes her work as “explorations of everyday experiences and observations of inner city life from a female perspective.” Starkey was born in 1971, in Belfast, and went on to study photography at Napier University, in Edinburgh. In the mid–90s, she moved to London for her masters degree and never went back to either Ireland or Scotland. Her routine unfolds similarly each day: mornings, afternoons, and evenings see Starkey walking the streets, taking pictures of women that interest her. Even with strangers, the shots are carefully staged. Starkey poses her subjects, curates the background, and precisely lights the scene. These fleeting glances of solitary urban life—and stillness—recall the paintings of Edward Hopper. Starkey’s first major survey presents two decades of work. —Elena Clavarino
