Inspired by works such as Titian’s Venus of Urbino (1538) and Pablo Picasso’s Aubade (1942), the German artist Georg Baselitz began incorporating a female nude based loosely on his wife, Elke, in paintings and drawings. The works on view at White Cube Hong Kong serve as a commentary on memory and the natural process of aging, themes that also fascinated Picasso. In each work, Baselitz seeks to combine abstraction and figuration while referencing the Western art canon. —Antoinette Roberts
