As Elliot Coon puts it, Gem & Bolt isn’t just a “party,” it’s a “celebration.” The party starts, however, with the Gem & Bolt mezcal that Coon developed with fellow artist AdrinAdrina (they’re co-founders of the brand). In the desert far from Oaxaca City, their Day of the Dead party is held at an abandoned hacienda in the midst of agave fields (mezcal is made from agave). Nothing is amiss—altars, zombies in sombreros. Mezcal carries an allusion to the arcane. —E.C.
