As a young man in the 1970s, Francesco Clemente lived in Rome and was surrounded by proponents of the Arte Povera movement, artists that included Pistoletto and Pino and Pascali. Clemente, however, chose his own path, creating ink drawings that channeled dreams and memories from his childhood in Naples, just minutes away from Mount Vesuvius. He went on to travel far and wide, first to Afghanistan and then to India, where he established a studio—a base that allowed him to study the country’s religious and folk traditions. Clemente’s personal journey, narrated through self-portraits and other seminal works, is the subject of this exhibition. The artist is now 70, but his work has never lost its mystical charm. —Elena Clavarino
