Ellen Hargis and David Douglass have been artistic co-directors of the Newberry Consort for 15 years, a tenure of aesthetic growth and triumph. For the last concert under their leadership, they have constructed a party for four lady friends, sopranos all. As Hargis says, “think Golden Girls or Sex and the City.” The evening brings together music by Marco Uccellini, Virgilio Mazzocchi, Giovanni Battista Sammartini, and Antonio Caldara. Using Mazzocchi’s intermezzo La Civetta (The Owl) as a sort of imaginative template, the directors have created a weekend at a hunting lodge—an escape full of clever arias, games, dancing, and a Joker, not to mention chaconnes and cantatas. A complimentary reception follows each performance. —Laura Jacobs
