To celebrate the advent of summer, contemporary ceramics artists Grita Götze, Heidi Manthey, and Sonngard Marcks have brought flowers, grasses, insects, and amphibians to vases, teapots, and plates, creating visions touched with surrealism. Rejecting the idea that ceramics are merely a background for expression, the artists play with the contrast between two and three dimensions: vases become sculptures, teapots become miniature statues, and plates become wall art. Here, 80 such works are on display. Joy and rebirth are major themes. —E.C.
