Flora, Fauna and Fable: Painting on Ceramics—Grita Götze, Heidi Manthey, Sonngard Marcks

Apr 24 – Oct 3, 2021
Schlossinsel 1, 12557 Berlin, Germany

To celebrate the advent of summer, contemporary ceramics artists Grita Götze, Heidi Manthey, and Sonngard Marcks have brought flowers, grasses, insects, and amphibians to vases, teapots, and plates, creating visions touched with surrealism. Rejecting the idea that ceramics are merely a background for expression, the artists play with the contrast between two and three dimensions: vases become sculptures, teapots become miniature statues, and plates become wall art. Here, 80 such works are on display. Joy and rebirth are major themes. —E.C.
