Fefu and Her Friends

The cast of Fefu and Her Friends.

Mar 20–23, 2025

In Fefu and Her Friends, eight women gather in a home where they grapple with personal struggles regarding privilege, politics, and power. Written in 1977 by the Cuban American playwright María Irene Fornés, and premiering that same year, the play is set in New England during the spring of 1935. It was always unconventional, with an all-female cast and innovative staging: the audience is split into four groups, each moving through the set to witness different scenes. By the play’s end, a death has occurred. Fefu and Her Friends now comes back with a contemporary edge. From her West Village townhouse, Violet Savage, together with Farmhands Productions, presents this new interpretation with a gender-fluid cast, preserving Fornés’s vision while placing the play in today’s political landscape.
