For the Costa Rican artist Federico Herrero, painting is a form of non-language-based communication. “I am fascinated by the way people who need to communicate something in a very direct way, without the barrier of language, use paint,” he has said. Street signs, advertisements, and billboards inform the artist’s own way of communicating with the viewer. The result is vibrant, organic forms on canvas and in the installations Herrero has become known for. This exhibition marks Herrero’s first major solo museum show in Brazil. —J.V.
