Faust, by Charles Gounod

October 29, 2019
Theatre Square, 1, Moskva, Russia, 125009

Face it. You’re never heading off to Ufa, capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan, not even to lay eyes on the theater that first fed the dreams of Rudolf Nureyev, at once the city’s most illustrious and notorious native son. All the more reason, then, to catch the resident Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theatre on tour in Moscow with Gounod’s Gothic Faust. It’s hardly the most risqué title in the canon. Yet the theater lists the show as being for adults only—same as the Bolshoi’s own Traviata, double bill of Menotti’s The Telephone and The Medium (no kidding), and the scandalous bio-ballet Nureyev. —M.G.
