James Ensor. René Magritte. Paul Delvaux. Belgium has had its fair share of exploratory Modernists. From the mid-19th century to the mid-20th, the Belgian art scene moved from realistic portraits and poetic landscapes to the realm of the unconscious—Surrealism. “Fantastically Real” contains 130 masterpieces of Belgian modernism—paintings, graphic works, and sculptures—dating from 1860 to 1960. Lesser known but important artists in this survey include Eugène Laermans, Constant Permeke, and Rik Wouters. —E.C.
