“Rain falls and night falls,” writes Esther Teichmann, in her book, Falling into Photography. “I fall in love and out of, into sleep and towards my death. I fall into the image, into the projected picture of the body I desire. I fall into photography.” How does a photographic image of a loved one relate to one’s experience of that love? How are they different in terms of possession, mutability, memory? These complex questions are the subject of an online exhibition curated by Evita Goze, who has chosen as a starting point Roland Barthes’s short book, Camera Lucida, in which he reflects on both the death of his mother and the nature of photography. Goze features the work of eight photographers in her exploration. —E.C.
